Councillor McCann Meeting Report (June 20, 2017)
73rd Annual 295 MacPherson Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets Inpsection
On Sunday afternoon, June 11th, I attended the 73rd Annual 295 MacPherson Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets Inspection at the Bobby Orr Community Centre. This traditionally follows a special banquet on the last Sunday of May. Congratulations to all the cadets for a successful inspection and successful year. The Squadron’s official sponsor is the Royal Canadian Legion, Parry Sound Branch 117 and it is believed that this year marks 70 years the Legion has acted as sponsor. When the Squadron was founded, the Rotary Club of Parry Sound served as its sponsor.
There is no cost to joining the cadets and the opportunities and rewards are invaluable. A new session will begin in September and parents and guardians are encouraged to find out more by visiting http://www.aircadetsparrysound.ca. Male or female between the ages of 12 to 18 may join. As the organization's web site indicates, cadets is a great way to find out more about Canada, make friends and develop new skills that will be with you for life, no matter what career you choose.
Hair Shearing Event At MaryJo's Hairstyling For Cancer Patients
(Scroll down for Video)
On Wednesday afternoon of last week, June 14th, I had the privilege of attending the Hair Shearing Event at MaryJo's Hairstyling, 69 Bowes Street, in Parry Sound. My job was to video tape the event. Ten individuals have donated their hair for the purpose of creating wigs for cancer patients in need. The hair will go to the Northeast Cancer Centre at Health Sciences North. Those donating hair were Pastor Lean Van Dyke and his wife Dana, Dr. Bill Smyth and his wife Gina, and four of their children, Ray, Ryan, Rudy and Rhea, also Darcy Weeks and his son Spencer contributed. We also had a special visit from Rita and Horst Bayer of Parry Sound who brought in two wigs to donate. They are cancer survivors. Thank you to MaryJo and her staff, Maryjo Kansik, Jessica Blacquier, Tina Edgar, Verity Watson and Kaitie Whitehall. Special thanks is also extended to Barb Perry who created and donated special ribbons!
Thank you also to Tim Hortons for providing coffee and timbits and to Gord Harrison who was also on camera. Thank you to Moose FM and the Parry Sound North Star for covering the event. A short video documenting this event will soon be available. The following before and after pictures illustrate the results of the hair shearing event!
