Councillor McCann Meeting Report (July 4, 2017)

Belvedere Heights Parry SoundBelvedere Heights Monthly Board of Management Meeting
On Wednesday, June 28th, I attended the Belvedere Heights Monthly Board of Management Meeting.   Monthly financial reporting and the approval of 2016-17 CSS audited financial statements were part of the business handled.  There was a discussion on parking and moving forward with the Town of Parry Sound and an ad-hoc committee being appointed to investigate solutions.  The tunnel decommissioning for Belvedere's part is now complete.

The installation of the RoamAlert System is complete and a policy has been developed.  Our CEO brought forward some very interesting information on Dementia friendly flooring approved by the Alzheimer Society.  This pays respect to colour and texture.  We will be making use of this flooring technology to replace aging or worn carpet and flooring as becomes necessary.

Belvedere Heights has been selected as the project sponsor for a group completing a Capstone project through Conestoga College's Post Graduate Certificate in Project Management.  The group will review resident and staff risk relative to the layout and security of the building and deliver a report outlining the potential deficits and risks, recommendations for suitable solutions, and a budget plan for any changes.  I am pleased to participate on this committee.

We have one Life Lease Unit available for sale, Unit 207.

We also talked about strategic planning and set the date for our Annual General Meeting, Thursday, October 19th of 2017.

Parry Sound High SchoolParry Sound High School Graduation Ceremonies
On Friday, June 30th, I attended the Parry Sound High School Graduation Ceremonies.  Congratulations to all graduating students.  Attendance was great, packing the gymnasiums.  A number of awards were presented.  As each student is presented with his or her diploma, it is most inspiring to hear about their plans, whether it's heading off to college or university, entering the work force, or in some cases returning in the fall to 12B for further studies.  We can take great pride in the achievements of our students and we wish them well on their journey.  By the way, the graduating students this year were mostly born in 1999, and so there was a theme infused in the commencement program, "Party like it's 1999!"

Special Public Meeting With Gumption Inc.
On Wednesday evening, June 28th, I attended a special public meeting regarding an expressed concern over whether there is a possibility of a link between the rate of cancer and other sicknesses and the industrial history of the Nobel area.  The Parry Sound Beacon Star, on Friday, June 30th, 2017, page two, published an article, "Gumption looks at former munitions site and health" and it's worth the read.

Gumption Inc.Anna Martin and Gumption Inc., a non-profit organization, authored the extensive report.  Rupert Kindersley who sits on Gumption's board and is an executive member of the Georgian Bay Association or GBA, prepared the executive summary of the report.  The GBA is now involved with this initiative.

Rupert and local pharmacist Kris Phillips are now heading the local initiative.  The focus is on moving ahead with a conciliatory and a co-operative manner.  This is not about casting blame.  There is an appetite here to explore solutions that will be pursuant and conducive to healthy living and a healthy environment.  I encourage people of the West Parry Sound Area to watch for more information and news in the near future.
