Councillor McCann Meeting Report (December 6, 2016)

Parry Sound Area Industrial Park Board Meeting
On Thursday, November 17th, along with Councillors Borneman and Keith, I attended the monthly Parry Sound Area Industrial Park Board Meeting.  Financial Statements for 2016 were accepted.  Minimum Development Requirements were reviewed and pricing of lots in the park were discussed.

West Parry Sound Refugee Program
Later that evening, 6:30, I attended a General Meeting of the West Parry Sound Refugee Program Committee Meeting.  There were several pressing issues to discuss, but everything is good and on track.  Then on Tuesday, November 29th, 6:00 to 9:00 PM, there was a pot luck dinner held as a "Welcome Party" for our two families.  It was hosted at St. James United Church.

I would also like to give a shout-out to other organizations in the area working on bringing refugee families to the region.  There is the Parry Sound Friends of Refugees group and it is expecting a family of five in early 2017.   They have raised the minimum required of the co-sponsorship initiative under the Federal Government.  The group still has over $10,000 to raise.  They had a very successful bake sale at Scotiabank on Friday, December 2nd, raising $2,237!   They are a group of six individuals working on their own.  As well, there is another group with the Mennonite Church working on a sponsorship.

Optimist Club Parry Sound Santa Claus Parade
On Saturday afternoon, November 26th, I joined Councillors Bonnie Keith and Jim Marshall, along with Community Recreation Programs Coordinator Brad Weiler on the Optimist-Parry Sound float, in the Optimist Club, Parry Sound Santa Claus Parade.  The Town's, Chief Building Official, John Este was our driver!

Town of Parry Sound Budget Meeting
On Tuesday, November 29th, I attended the Town of Parry Sound Budget Meeting.

Belvedere Heights Board Meeting Via Conference Call
Yesterday, December 6th, at 4:30 PM, I took part in a telephone conference call in which the Belvedere Heights Board members were able to discuss some pending issues.  We are pleased to finally announce we have a Nurse Practitioner starting on December 12th, part-time and moving into full-time March 17th of 2017.

Park to Park Trail Association
The Park to Park Trail Association Board has tentatively set January 12th, 2017 (now changed to January 19th, 2017) as the date for its Annual General Meeting.  We are working on arrangements whereby Parry Sound would once again host the AGM.

Washouts have been a particular overwhelming problem this year.  The Association has submitted an application for funding via the South Seguin Snowmobile Club for matched funding and looking at other fund raiser initiatives which would be chipping in about $15,000.  It is hoped that other clubs and a "Go Fund Me" initiative will garner the necessary funds to repair the washouts.

There is another historic sign just about ready to go and it is believed there could be one more before the end of the year.

Parry Sound Victory School Commemorative Project Update
On behalf of the Parry Sound Victory School Commemorative Committee, I am very pleased and excited to announce that we will be hosting an Official Launch at the West Parry Sound District Museum on Friday, December 16th  from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Lion's Room.  This marks exactly two years in the making.  Watch for details in the next few days.  Keep an eye on our Facebook page and our web site at ParrySoundVictorySchool.com.  We are planning a media event with special guests. (Note: this event was moved to December 21st, 2016 due to weather conditions on the 16th)
