Well we no sooner just celebrated Megan Oldham's Olympic medals that we find ourselves with another "golden" reason to celebrate with Parry Sound native Mark Ideson leading the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Team to a gold medal this weekend. This was after beating defending champion China at the final game of the Milano Cortina Paralympics on March 14, 2026. Canada's wheelchair curling team accomplished something else. It made history with an undefeated round-robin and this medal is Mark's second in his career. The final score was 4-3 for Canada. You'll recall Mark's first gold was won at the Sochi Paralympics in 2014. He won bronze at both the 2018 and 2022 Paralympics. Congratulations to Mark and the Canadian team!!
Condolences to Family of Donald Brickett
I wish to take this opportunity to extend sincere sympathies to the family of Donald James Brickett who passed away in his 91st year, March 7, 2026 in Parry Sound. Don was a teacher, then a vice-principal and then principal with the Peel Board of Education. Quite active in his community, he helped new immigrant families adjust to life and the education system in Canada, ran running clubs, many after school activities, was coach and trainer for his son’s many hockey teams. He became a member of the Rotary Club in Mississauga and in many years, moved to Parry Sound and joined the Parry Sound Rotary in 1999. He served as President for both clubs. He earned the Paul Harris Fellow, twice. After retirement he served as Chairman of the Board for the West Parry Sound Health Centre and the Lakeland Long Term Care Facility. The community has lost another great pillar and indeed he will be missed.
